I’ve known since I was a little girl that i wanted to work with animals. I started riding horses at 7 yrs old. I’ve always been more comfortable around animals than humans !!!
I obtained my AS in animal science and worked as an equine vet tech after college.
My husband and I bought our first home in 2016 with some acreage and a little farm so I was able to have my horse with me on my property.
Shortly after we were there , the Local police department stopped by to see if would rescue a goat that was living in NYC in a penthouse apartment in the bathtub eating lettuce
We immediately said yes and that was my first goat - Beans. We rescued a friend for her, Jelly, and lived there until 2019, at which time we were moved to a larger property and I had switched careers from equine vet tech to mixed animal vet tech.
It was my introduction to the mixed animal environment that opened my eyes to the monstrous treatment of farm animals.
Seemed like every week, a farmer was bringing in an animal for euthanasia because they didn’t want to bother to provide medical care or because the animal, a commodity to them, stopped being useful.
My first rescued goat in our new property was a baby who had been trampled by a horse and her back legs were paralyzed.
I worked with Yale medical to have a cart built and Peeps is living her best life at a sanctuary in NJ.
When that happen, I said to my husband “I would like to start rescuing these babies and provide forever homes for goats like peeps.
The next time a farmer abandoned a goat , I was there and a few more after that , my husband and I said “we need to be an official 501c3, and Road To Refuge was established, March of 2020.
We’ve since saved over 100 lives , either directly rehoming to our rescue , or collaborating with other rescues.
We have cows, pigs, sheep and goats.
It was when we rescued our cows that i went full vegan, I was vegetarian prior to that.
Seeing what horrors are out there in some of the dairy industries and how these sentient beings were treated opened my eyes further.
We continue to focus on the animals who have intense medical or special needs because of my veterinary background.
I can provide services and treatments myself and while we were never expecting there would be such a need, we’re so glad we are here for these animals and with the help of our supporters and donations, will continue to give these animals the best chance to live their best life at a place we call heaven on earth.
